“Okay, where is it?” my brother asked as soon as he got out of his truck. We had shortened our stay in West Glacier by one day so we can head to East Glacier and Two Medicine Lake campground. A beautiful road although the access to the lake was bumpy with 1 deep dip I kept hitting.
“Okay, where is it?”. I told him both our camp stoves were taken. We found 2 great campsites next to the lake, lots of sun, great views and unpacked and set up camp. Then we each headed off to see site with us venturing into East Glacier and the Glacier Lodge. We were only gone an hour but our stoves were taken. There was an official-looking slip of paper under a rock on the picnic tables….hmmm. Okay, the Rangers took our stoves and left the note saying they were not allowed out at the site. After seeking out the camp host and calling the Rangers, I was able to get the stoves back but kept my brother’s in my truck until his return. Evidently, the bears have binoculars and can smell dirty stove grates over 10 miles away. They only allow them out for immediate use then restore them. My bad.
The lake was gorgeous as were the views. In the evening, we spotted 3 black bears and a grizzly up on the hill eating the last of the huckleberries. We could see them clearly by eye and better by binoculars.
Glacier Park Lodge was built by the railroad and still has original bark on the posts inside. It is incredible but what we found interesting was that it is only open for about 4 months of the year. We caught them a week before closing.
Morning shed lots of sun on the peaks around the lake and made for a memorable last day in Glacier. We will certainly be back.
