Today we say goodbye to Maxwell I and say hello and welcome to Maxwell II or ‘Big Max’. A little background is needed…..
We came back from our Idaho trip and dropped off Lil Max to the Airstream dealer. They needed to check out the inverter outlets and the tank sensors because I didn’t see that they worked. On the way home from that trip, where we dry camped through 3 long days (okay, no sentiment needed) I convinced the CFO or our team to at least look at a larger trailer. One where I didn’t have to sleep on a dinette cushion in a sleeping bag. One where the dog has her space. And one where we didn’t have to “do the dance” so often that it gets wearing.
Our Idaho trip was fun and we learned a lot about how we wanted to use our trailer. We both agreed that this one, at 19 feet, is great for short weekend trips to maybe a week. Any longer though, and she would strike me stupid…..okay, too much drama, but hey, these were tight quarters. I mean, the dog almost had to back into the trailer at night. We wanted to take trips of 3-4 weeks at a stretch and a bigger trailer would allow that to occur….at least that is what we tell ourselves.
While camping, I just happened to pull out a copy of the various Airstream coach layouts and with it raining outside, no time better to discuss what would be an optimal trailer for us and the way we wanted to travel. Still hesitant on the cost, we dreamed of a trailer that had room to dress, to dry off after showers, to cook and to prep. We had room to spare in storage space as long as we had the truck as our tow vehicle. And with that truck, we could tow a larger trailer with no issue. So what would it be?
We dropped off Lil Max at the dealer and roamed the lot of used and new trailers. We looked at a 23′ but it was essentially our same layout with a little more room in the galley….I would still have to sleep on the table! My personal favorite was a 25′ front bedroom which gives more room in the back with wide windows. There was a queen sized bed but a lot more room in the “living” area with a pull out bed and skylights. So we sauntered over to a new 2016 version of the 25′ Flying Cloud with a front bedroom. Hmm, this one had twin beds. I was not sure how the little lady would like this and I think she was surprised at all the light and the room inside. There was room between the beds to move, dress, and dance. There is a separate shower from the bathroom so more than one could use the facilities. There was prep space, lounging space, and room for Miss Cleo. A hit for sure.
So we made the deal and traded our fairly new, 2014 Airstream 19′ Flying Cloud for the 2016 25′ Flying Cloud Front Bedroom Twin. Big Max is only 6′ longer and 6″ wider. It has larger tanks for dry camping longer, more storage, and a larger refrigerator. The beds are an extra-long size, not standard twin size so sheets have to be ordered. There is room for grandchildren to stay, assuming that happens, which we would like. A pull-out bunk is located under the lounge seat and the table can come down for an additional bed – sleeping 5 easily.
This gave us more stowage outside, awnings around 3 sides, more windows/light/breeze and ducted air-conditioning. Now the job is to outfit it and start planning more, longer trips. Our first trip…. maybe to Orlando Florida to attend our Nephew’s Wedding next month! We are excited to get going.
